Redevelop and Remodel Your Home

Two tips for homeowners who need to renovate their small kitchens

Carrying out a kitchen renovation project on a small kitchen can be difficult. Here are two suggestions for homeowners who need to do this.

They should talk to their contractor about adding some clever storage solutions to the kitchen

A homeowner in this situation should ask their remodelling contractor to come up with a few good storage solutions for their kitchen. This is important as, in a kitchen where there is limited space, every area needs to be fully utilised so that the kitchen is easy and safe to use. For example, chopping boards are essential in almost any kitchen and most people use them virtually every day to prep their meat and vegetables. However, in a small kitchen, they can take up quite a bit of cabinet or drawer space. One possible solution to this issue would be for the homeowner to have their contractor add a built-in, pull-out chopping board to either their wall-mounted benchtop or to a section of their kitchen island benchtop. This would mean the chopping board would always be easily accessible but would not use up any drawer or cabinet space.

Similarly, if the homeowner likes to have a few bottles of wine on hand for cooking and drinking, they might want to have their contractor add a slim, vertical built-wine rack in between their cabinets so that they don't have to put a space-guzzling separate wine rack on their benchtop that would leave them with less room to prep food.

They should not rule out the possibility of building a kitchen island if they use their kitchen as a dining area

Whilst in a truly tiny kitchen, it wouldn't be feasible to add a kitchen island, many smallish kitchens can benefit from having this seemingly bulky feature added to them. As such, if a homeowner has a small (but not tiny) kitchen that they need to use as a dining space, they should not rule out the idea of having their remodelling contractor build an island in it during its renovation.

The first reason for this is that even a compact kitchen island is usually a better option than a dining table, as it will not just function as a place to eat meals but will also serve multiple other purposes. It could, for example, be used as a food prep area, as a place to wash dishes (if it has a sink), as a storage area and as a place for additional integrated appliances (such as a dishwasher). The second reason is that, unlike a dining table, a kitchen island may add value to the property. The third and final reason is that if the contractor were to add extra plug sockets to the island, the homeowner could use kitchen gadgets (like blenders, their kettle, etc.) on the island when the wall-socket plugs are all in use. In a small kitchen, this could be very helpful.
