Ideas For Renovating Your Kitchen To Seem Bigger

If your kitchen feels cramped, you may decide to renovate it to look and feel larger. You don't necessarily have to move walls to achieve this. Just apply some simple design techniques, as explained below.

Shiny Surfaces

Shiny surfaces are more light-reflective than matte ones. And if your kitchen has more light bouncing around, it will naturally look larger. So how do you incorporate shine into the room? There are plenty of ways.

Glossy doors (especially in pale colours) brighten the space. Or else, fit a polished stone countertop or glossy white porcelain tiles over the splashback. Don't forget about the floor — if it's shiny, it will impact the entire kitchen. You could install polished concrete flooring for an up-to-date look or opt for tiles.

Glass Cabinet Doors

Of course, storage is essential in a kitchen, and you need enough to keep the countertops from becoming cluttered with stuff that has no home. However, cupboards take up a lot of floor area. They visually bring the wall closer and thus reduce the open space. A clever way to combat this effect is to fit glass doors on the upper cupboards. The glass lets you see inside to the wall behind. So the kitchen will seem subtly bigger, and the storage will dominate less. Glass doors, though, do put on the pressure to keep the storage tidy. But dinner plates and crockery are not too hard to keep neat.

Linear Patterns

You can also use linear patterns and elongated lines to give the illusion of a roomier space. For example, long floor planks facing the length of the kitchen can make it appear longer. If your home is open plan, you could extend the planks to the areas beside the kitchen, creating a continuous flow. The room will then seem longer.

You can also use this strategy on the walls by laying oblong tiles with a linear emphasis directed towards the ceiling. The room will appear taller and bigger overall. Alternatively, paint the walls with subtle two-toned vertical stripes. Or hang vertical blinds from floor to ceiling if the kitchen has a tall window.

Sleek Appliances

Another way to free up space is to fit sleek rather than bulky appliances. Doing so saves room in kitchens. Plus, they'll make the room feel larger simply because the devices are smaller and not as visually dominating. Even if you hide them behind the cabinetry, they'll take less room.
