Redevelop and Remodel Your Home

Two Situations in Which You Should Replace Your Benchtop When Remodelling Your Kitchen

Not every kitchen remodelling project requires the replacement of the room's benchtops. However, below you'll find a couple of situations in which you would probably need to switch out your old kitchen benchtops for new ones.

Your food preparation habits have changed and your benchtops are now unsuitable

If you have changed the way you prepare food, then it might be wise to get some new benchtops installed. For example, if you used to be the kind of person who ate mostly microwaveable meals or dishes that never had more than three ingredients in them, then the size, material and condition of your kitchen benchtops probably didn't matter to you, as you rarely had to use them.

If however, you've developed a passion for baking elaborate cakes or if you like to make interesting dinners with lots of spices, vegetables and other ingredients, then you may need better benchtops. You might, for instance, require much wider ones that allow you to spread lots of ingredients, bowls and kitchen utensils across them without knocking things onto the floor, and you may need one that is not porous so that bacteria from the meat or vegetables you prepare on it don't leave pathogens trapped in these pores. In this situation, you may need to get your remodelling contractor to fit an extra-wide benchtop that is made from a non-porous material like quartz.

The benchtops won't match the new features your remodelling contractor is going to fit

Even if your benchtops are suitable for your cooking habits and look quite nice, you may still have to get them replaced when remodelling the kitchen if they won't match the other new items your contractor plans to fit. For example, if you have a stainless steel benchtop and intend to get rustic, shaker-style wooden cabinets fitted, then this benchtop may need to be replaced, as its modernity will clash with the cabinets' old cottage aesthetic.

If you encounter this issue, you should get the remodelling contractor to carefully remove this benchtop, rather than just tearing it out yourself. The reason for this is as follows; it's in fairly good condition, you could make some money from selling it that you could then use for the other parts of the remodelling project. Alternatively, you could reinstall it in some other area of your home. For instance, if you're into crafting, you could fit the benchtop in the garage and use it as your crafting table.
